Transportation Strategy under the Dual Supervision of MFDS and RDA for Shipping Pet Food to South Korea

The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) and the Rural Development Administration (RDA) jointly supervise pet food imports in South Korea. Products must be registered with MFDS and provide documents such as ingredient lists, nutritional analysis reports, manufacturing factory hygiene licenses, and certificates of origin. For products with meat or fish ingredients, veterinary health certificates must be provided to prove that the raw materials come from areas recognized by South Korea and are free from specific diseases.

Packaging must comply with South Korean food hygiene laws and adopt sealed, anti – oxidation designs. Labels must be in Korean, indicating product names, ingredients, applicable pet types, feeding methods, net content, shelf life, country of origin, and manufacturer information. If functional ingredients are included, safety assessment reports must be provided.

Transportation can be air freight (1 – 2 days) or sea freight (3 – 5 days). Avoid peak periods at South Korean ports. During customs clearance, MFDS, RDA, and the customs will conduct joint inspections, focusing on checking whether the products meet South Korean food safety standards and whether tariffs (5 – 15%) and value – added tax (10%) have been paid. Entrusting professional customs brokers can reduce the risk of document errors.
