Thailand’s Guide to Importing Health Products from China and Precautions

Registration and Certification: Health products need to be registered with the Thai Food and Drug Administration (TFDA). The registration time is usually long, which may be from several months to more than a year, depending on the complexity of the product and the completeness of the documents. Quality control documents, label and packaging information, proof of identity and ownership, market authorization of the country of origin, etc. need to be submitted during registration.

Label requirements: The label must be in Thai and include the product name, ingredient list, efficacy description, method of consumption, shelf life, storage conditions, manufacturer and importer information, etc. The text, pattern and logo on the label must be clear and accurate, and there must be no misleading content.

Import process

Product classification: Health products usually belong to the category of “food with quality or standard requirements”, and importers need to clarify the product category.

Sample testing: Depending on the product category, samples may need to be sent to a Thai laboratory for testing, and the test items include microbial indicators, heavy metal content, ingredient analysis, etc.

Submit application: Submit the registration application through the FDA account of the Thai licensee (if there is no company in Thailand, an agent must be designated).

Review and approval: TFDA conducts a comprehensive review and evaluation of the application and will request additional information if necessary. A registration certificate will be issued after the review is passed.

Import customs clearance: After the goods arrive at the Thai port or airport, the importer submits the registration certificate, commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading and other documents for customs clearance. Customs and TFDA will inspect the goods to ensure that the products meet the registration requirements and Thai regulations.

Notes

Plan time in advance: Due to the long registration time, importers need to plan import plans in advance and start the registration process as early as possible to avoid delays in registration that may cause the goods to be unable to be imported on time.

Ensure document compliance: All submitted documents must comply with TFDA requirements, and the format, content, etc. must be accurate, otherwise the application may be rejected.

Focus on product quality: Thailand has strict supervision on the quality of imported health products. Importers should strengthen the control of the quality of products from Chinese suppliers and conduct regular quality inspections.
