“Prohibited Items in Rail Transportation: The Bottom Line for Safe Travel of Passengers”

Railway, as one of the important transportation methods in China, carries a large number of passengers every day. In order to ensure the safety of passengers and the normal order of railway transportation, the railway department has formulated strict regulations on the transportation of prohibited items, which is the bottom line for ensuring the safe travel of passengers.

The types of items prohibited from being carried or checked in for rail transportation are rich and complex. Firearms, bullets, and related items are absolutely prohibited. This includes military guns such as pistols, submachine guns, rifles, machine guns, anti – riot guns, and various types of matching bullets; civilian guns such as air guns, hunting rifles, sporting guns, anesthesia injection guns, and corresponding bullets; as well as starting pistols, sample guns, prop guns, steel ball guns, tear gas guns, stun guns, water bullet guns, etc., and even samples and imitations of these items are not allowed to be transported. The danger of firearms and ammunition is self – evident. In crowded railway stations and trains, once firearms and ammunition get out of control, it will lead to serious casualties.

Explosive items are also strictly prohibited in rail transportation. In terms of ammunition, various types of ammunition such as bombs, grenades, hand grenades, landmines, flares, and incendiary bombs are prohibited; blasting materials such as explosives, detonators, fuses, detonating cords, seismic source bombs, and blasting agents, as well as fireworks and firecrackers products, such as fireworks shells, fireworks, firecrackers, snap – pops, pull – pops, smash – pops, and various types of fireworks and firecrackers, as well as starting paper, black powder, pyrotechnic powder, and fuses, all these items have great explosive danger. During the railway transportation process, the vibration of the train during operation and the frequent movement of people may increase the risk of accidents with explosive items. For example, once a passenger’s fireworks and firecrackers accidentally ignited while waiting at the railway station, causing chaos and panic in the waiting hall. Fortunately, no major casualties occurred.

Controlled appliances are also an important part of prohibited items in rail transportation. Controlled knives, such as daggers, three – edged knives (including three – edged scrapers for mechanical processing), spring – loaded knives (flick knives) with self – locking devices, as well as various single – edged, double – edged, and multi – edged knives with a tip angle of less than 60 degrees and a blade length of more than 150 millimeters, and various single – edged, double – edged, and multi – edged knives with a tip angle of more than 60 degrees and a blade length of more than 220 millimeters, and even ceramic knives that meet the above conditions are strictly prohibited from being carried. In addition, other appliances such as batons, military or police daggers, bayonets, tear gas devices, stun guns, self – defense devices, crossbows, and crossbow arrows are also prohibited. These controlled appliances may be used to harm others on the train and disrupt the safety order of railway transportation.

Flammable and explosive items are also strictly prohibited in rail transportation. Compressed and liquefied gases, such as hydrogen, methane, ethane, ethylene oxide, dimethyl ether, butane, natural gas, etc., once these gases leak, they are extremely likely to explode when they encounter a fire source in a confined space; flammable liquids, such as gasoline, kerosene, diesel, benzene, alcohol, and alcoholic beverages (with a volume percentage content greater than 75% or unclear labels), are flammable and prone to causing fires; flammable solids such as red phosphorus, flash powder, solid alcohol, self – igniting substances such as yellow phosphorus, white phosphorus, nitrocellulose (including film), substances that are flammable when wet such as potassium metal, sodium metal, lithium metal, calcium carbide, and oxidants and organic peroxides such as potassium permanganate, potassium chlorate, sodium peroxide, all these items pose great safety hazards.

Poisonous substances, corrosive substances, radioactive substances, and infectious substances are also not allowed in rail transportation. Poisonous substances such as cyanide and arsenic will cause fatal harm to the human body; corrosive substances such as sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, and nitric acid will damage railway facilities and passengers’ belongings; the radiation of radioactive substances will endanger human health; infectious substances may spread diseases and pose a serious threat to the safety of passengers’ lives.

The railway department sets up security inspection equipment at stations to strictly inspect passengers’ luggage and personnel to prevent prohibited items from entering the railway transportation system. When taking a train, passengers must understand the relevant regulations on prohibited items in rail transportation in advance and not carry prohibited items, jointly maintaining the safety of railway transportation and ensuring their own and other passengers’ safe travel.
