United States’ Transportation Safety Regulations and Hazardous Goods Packaging Standards
U.S. transportation regulations are uniformly supervised by the DOT (Department of Transportation), implementing strict classification management for hazardous goods transportation. According to 49 CFR regulations, lithium batteries are classified as Class 9 hazardous goods and must use UN3481 certified packaging. Each packaging unit must contain lithium content not exceeding 20Wh, with diamond-shaped hazardous material labels and “Handle With Care” markings on outer packaging. All imported goods must submit ISF (Importer Security Filing) through the ACE system 24 hours in advance, with missing declarations facing fines of $5,000 per shipment.
Packaging materials must meet ASTM D4169 transportation testing standards, passing vibration, impact, and pressure tests. Food-contact product packaging must obtain FDA certification, use food-grade ink for printing, and must not contain bisphenol A (BPA). Wooden packaging requires FSC certification or ISPM 15 markings. Agricultural product packaging must indicate origin and inspection and quarantine numbers, with clear UPC barcodes on outer boxes to facilitate customs scanning verification.
