Brazil’s Import License System and Tropical Climate Packaging Requirements
Brazil implements an “Import License System” (Licença de Importação) for imported goods. Some products require prior application for import licenses from Brazil’s Foreign Trade Secretariat (SECEX), with approval cycles typically 15-30 days. Under the Consumer Protection Law, all product packaging must have Portuguese labels including product name, specifications, manufacturer information, and usage instructions. Missing Portuguese labels may result in cargo detention.
Brazil has a tropical climate, so packaging must be moisture and mold resistant, passing humidity tests according to ABNT NBR 14778 standards (48 hours at 90% relative humidity without mold growth). Metal product packaging must use rust-proof materials (such as VCI vapor-phase rust paper), with outer boxes marked “Proteção contra ferrugem” (rust protection). Liquid product packaging must use anti-expansion designs (considering thermal expansion and contraction), with double-cap designs for bottle mouth sealing to prevent high-temperature leakage. Wooden packaging must provide Portuguese-language ISPM 15 certificates.
