Ghana’s SMEDA Standards and West African Savannah Packaging Requirements

Ghana operates under ECOWAS standards with additional requirements from the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA). Products require the “Ghana Standard Authority” (GS) mark for market access. Declarations are submitted through the “GCNet” customs system, with English documentation. Agricultural inputs need additional certification from the Ministry of Food and Agriculture.

Packaging must resist savannah dust and tropical rains, using dust-tight seals for mechanical parts. Food packaging displays “Nutritional Information” in English with “Expiry Date” in dd/mm/yyyy format. Construction materials use reinforced pallets (18mm plywood) for transport on Ghana’s road network. Wooden packaging requires GSA-approved ISPM 15 certification with Ghanaian Agricultural Ministry fumigation stamp.
