New Zealand’s MPI Biosecurity and Clean Green Packaging Standards
New Zealand’s strict biosecurity regulations are enforced by the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI). All imports must be declared through the “Customs Declaration Service”, with MPI permits required for agricultural products. Food products need MPI registration, while electronics require Electrical Safety approval.
Biosecurity-compliant packaging is critical—no untreated wood or plant materials allowed. Packaging must be “clean and free of soil” with MPI inspection certificates for high-risk items. Sustainable packaging is mandated, with plastic containing 30% recycled content and “Recycling NZ” symbols. Food packaging displays “Nutritional Information” in English with “Best Before” date. Cold chain products use temperature-monitoring packaging (maintaining -18°C for sea freight).
