Shipping Tea from China to South Africa: Transportation Guide and Key Points

Exporting tea to South Africa requires adaptation to its unique trading environment and regulatory requirements to ensure smooth transportation.

Transportation Process

  1. Document and Certification Handling: Tea must meet the relevant standards of the South African National Standards Bureau (SANS). Provide pesticide residue test reports, ingredient analysis reports, etc. Prepare commercial invoices, packing lists, certificates of origin, and phytosanitary certificates, all filled in English.
  2. Packaging Specifications: Use moisture – proof and crush – resistant packaging. Seal the tea in aluminum foil bags as the inner packaging, and use sturdy cartons as the outer packaging with buffer materials inside. Mark the goods information, fragile labels, and South African importer information on the outer packaging.
  3. Export Procedures: Entrust freight forwarders or customs brokers in China to handle export customs clearance, truthfully declare tea information, and cooperate with customs inspections to complete the export process.
  4. Transportation Selection: Select according to the situation of the goods. Air freight (5 – 10 days) is suitable for urgent or high – value goods; sea freight (30 – 45 days) is suitable for large – volume, regular orders.
  5. South African Import Customs Clearance: After the goods arrive in South Africa, the customs clearance agent submits documents to the South African customs. The customs reviews whether the goods meet SANS standards and may conduct spot checks. After passing the review, pay tariffs (the tariff rate is about 5 – 15%) and value – added tax
