How to Deal with Cargo Damage and Loss in International Transportation
Cargo damage and loss are common risks in international transportation. When such problems occur, first, take timely measures to reduce losses. If the goods are damaged, take photos and videos as evidence immediately, and keep the original packaging. For perishable goods, arrange for disposal or re-export in time if necessary. Second, notify the relevant parties. Inform the carrier, insurance company, and consignee within the specified time (usually within 3 days for visible damage, and within 15 days for hidden damage). Submit a written claim notice stating the details of the damage or loss, the cause, and the amount of claim. Third, collect relevant evidence, including the bill of lading, commercial invoice, packing list, survey report issued by a professional surveyor, and proof of the value of the goods. If insured, submit the claim materials to the insurance company according to the insurance contract. Negotiate with the carrier or insurance company; if the negotiation fails, you can resort to legal means or arbitration. To prevent such problems, choose appropriate packaging, strengthen cargo inspection before transportation, and purchase sufficient insurance.
