Kenya’s KEBS Certification and East African Community Packaging Requirements

Kenya implements East African Community (EAC) standards through the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS). All regulated products must obtain the “Standardization Mark” (S Mark) before import, with pre-export verification by KEBS-accredited agencies. Declarations are submitted via the “iTax” customs system, with English documentation required.

Packaging must withstand rough roads in rural areas, using double-walled corrugated boxes (minimum 5-ply) for durability. Agricultural inputs require UV-resistant packaging with “Uwezo wa Kuzuia Mwangaza” (UV Resistance) certification. Food packaging displays “Nutritional Information” in English and Swahili, with “Tarehe ya Kupoteza Uadilifu” (Expiry Date) clearly marked. Electrical goods need KEBS certification labels and 240V/50Hz markings. Wooden packaging requires KEBS fumigation certificates with heat treatment verification.
