Precautions for Shipping Lithium Batteries Internationally

Lithium batteries are classified as dangerous goods due to their flammable and explosive properties, and their international transportation is subject to strict regulations. First, packaging must comply with UN38.3 standards, using anti-static and explosion-proof packaging. Each package should not exceed a certain weight, for example, the net weight of lithium-ion batteries in a single package for air freight should not exceed 30kg. It is necessary to mark “lithium battery” and “handle with care” on the package. Second, relevant documents must be provided, including the lithium battery test report (UN38.3 test), dangerous goods declaration form, and MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet). Different transportation modes have different requirements: air freight requires more stringent inspection, and some airlines may refuse to carry lithium batteries with high energy density. Sea freight also requires compliance with the IMDG Code. Before transportation, it is necessary to confirm with the carrier whether they accept lithium battery transportation and understand their specific requirements. In addition, it is prohibited to ship damaged or defective lithium batteries to avoid safety accidents during transportation.
