South Africa’s SABS Certification and Safari Industry Packaging Standards

South Africa’s import regulations are governed by the South African Revenue Service (SARS) and Department of Trade, Industry and Competition. Products must meet SABS (South African Bureau of Standards) certification where applicable, with electrical goods requiring LOA (Letter of Authority) approval. Customs declarations must include the 8-digit HS code from the South African Customs Tariff Book.

Packaging for goods destined for safari areas and rural regions requires extra durability, with impact-resistant materials to withstand rough road transportation. Agricultural equipment must use corrosion-resistant packaging with VCI (Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor) technology to protect against South Africa’s high humidity coastal regions. Food packaging must display nutritional information in English and at least one other official language (Zulu, Xhosa, or Afrikaans), with clear expiration dates in “DD/MM/YYYY” format.
