The Impact of Environmental Protection Policies on International Transportation

Environmental protection policies are increasingly influencing the development of international transportation, promoting the industry towards greener practices. One significant impact is on fuel standards. Many countries and regions have implemented stricter emissions regulations for ships and aircraft, requiring the use of low-sulfur fuel or installing exhaust gas cleaning systems. For example, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) implemented a global sulfur cap of 0.5% on marine fuel in 2020, forcing shipping companies to switch to more expensive low-sulfur fuel or invest in scrubbers, which has increased transportation costs. These cost increases are often passed on to customers through higher freight rates.

Another impact is the promotion of green transportation modes. Governments are encouraging the use of more environmentally friendly transportation methods, such as railways instead of road or air freight for certain routes. The China-Europe Railway Express, for instance, is supported by environmental policies in many countries because it produces lower carbon emissions per unit of cargo compared to sea or air freight. Some countries also provide subsidies or tax incentives for green logistics practices, such as using electric vehicles for last-mile delivery or adopting energy-efficient containers.

Carbon pricing mechanisms are also affecting international transportation. Some regions have introduced carbon taxes or emissions trading systems that require transportation companies to pay for their carbon emissions. This has prompted logistics providers to optimize routes, improve fuel efficiency, and invest in alternative fuels such as LNG (liquefied natural gas) for ships and biofuels for aircraft to reduce their carbon footprint and costs.

In response, transportation companies are increasingly incorporating environmental factors into their business strategies, developing green logistics solutions, and disclosing their environmental performance to meet regulatory requirements and customer expectations for sustainable practices.
